I see in this piece a bird shattering the bonds that kept her stagnant and taking her flight to freedom. I didn’t know at first how this painting will turn out. But as I was working on it, I could see what it wanted to become and I followed the way the colors and strokes worked together. When I reached the final point I stopped, took a step back and said to myself ‘’It’s a bird taking off! How surprising!’’ Then I realized that the thought of flying, of going up high, rising above the now and toward a brighter world, was in my mind all along. Now that we are about to emerge from a year of isolation and fear due to the pandemic, we begin to wonder how the post-pandemic world might look like and how we are going to find our place in it. We need to become unbound again and recreate our world anew—brighter, better and kinder.

Christine's Sponsored Cause: The Red Cross

I’m an artist, but I’m also a physician and a psychiatrist. I want the world to be a happier, healthier place, and I want to promote and support people and organizations who are working to make that happen.

deeply relate to all the healthcare workers and volunteers who show up every day to help people overcome physical and emotional illnesses. It can be difficult to keep going and to believe that our contributions are making a difference, especially in the face of overwhelming suffering and illness.

The Red Cross is more than just an organization. It’s become a symbol of the global community of volunteers who are out there offering help and hope, just like we are. One person at a time. One crisis at a time. We aren’t alone. And, together, we are making a difference.
